David O'Reilly creates animated short films using digital tools. He allows the natural voice of the digital image to speak through hastily rendered polygons, compressions artifacts, and trace elements of the interface.
His short film, Please Say Something, was awarded the Golden Bear at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival, Best Narrative Short at the 2009 Ottawa International Animation Festival and several other awards.
The Irishman makes animations; simple, coarse short films employing a naïve aesthetic – sometimes reminding of children’s drawings, sometimes of the pre-After Effects times of pixelated computer animations. Their narrative thread is short, revealing brief moments of the characters' lives. Like in fables and comics, these characters are usually animals acting in a human way.
The 2008-animation “Octocat adventure” is about a cat with octopus-legs searching for its parents. The series was released under the pseudonym Randy Peters in five parts on Youtube, taking advantage of the viral effects of the medium. The videos featured crude MS Paint animation and a loud, highpitched, child-like voice narrating. When the fifth, final episode was released, it featured an unexpected twist - about 20 seconds into it, the crude sketchy animation switched to intricately crafted 3D with an orchestral soundtrack; and so Randy Peters was revealed to be David O´Reilly.
